First, a warm thank-you to the Markham Group of Artists, for inviting me as a juror.
My warmest congratulations to all of the artists who have been included in this show and I hope you agree that it is an exciting and very versatile one.
I want especially to direct comments to the artists who find that their work was not included. First I know from many personal experiences as I got juried out from some shows over the years myself, one asks why? You know your work is good, strong, done with conviction, so again, why?
Well, the answer is not so simple.
First, you have a juror who tries very hard to be very open minded and multifaceted, but all jurors have some subconscious preferences. Although we, as jurors, try very hard to be impartial to all expressions, it is only natural and to be expected that there are some aspects, particularly if the juror is an artist himself, which are stronger and more positive to his choices than other work.
Technically the work across the board was very professional, so the question arises are there other factors? For choosing a work, my main criteria are that it must bring a personal expression and an original way to express a particular theme that opens up a new dimension to the viewer.
The works I gave the awards and honorary mentions have impressed me the most, as they have achieved this mandate.
I hope this will shed some light on my choices. I do hope all of you will continue to search in your own way and follow you own ideas, only on this path will you develop and stay true to yourself and create work which is of value to you and others.
