Portraiture with Joan Holben

Wednesday, April 25, 2018

9:30 - 3:30

This portrait workshop is unique in that you don’t have to be able to draw.  You arrive at the class with an image on your canvas and Joan will show you how to finish it.

Joan HolbenBorn in Ottawa, Joan Holben resided in Eastern Ontario until 1963. She is a world traveller and lived many years in India, where she established a technical training program. Upon returning to Canada in 1967, she set up her first studio in Eastern Ontario while she attended Queen's University and later Sheridan College, to further her painting career. She set up art programs and taught in elementary and secondary schools until accepting a position of coordinator of Visual Arts at St. Lawrence College in Brockville. Joan also at the time set up functional art programs for teachers at Danforth Technical School in Toronto. She has traveled extensively across Canada, residing for a time in British Columbia, where she established herself as a major new talent. Holben moved to Toronto in 1979 where she operated a studio gallery for two years on Bloor Street. She is currently the Resident Artist for Democo Inc./ Montreal and a Working Artist for Golden, U.S.A. She has conducted a number of solo exhibitions and is represented in many personal collections in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Asia and Eastern Europe.

Her portraits are haunting and memorable.

Message from the artist:

Have your drawing already on the canvas. This will save time.  This class is about using a colour undercoat and how not to paint everything.  The idea will be to let some of the undercoat visible and still go home with a painting you will be proud of.   You can use acrylic or oil.  I will bring undercoat colours.  Bring your paint and one or two good brushes, brush size depends on the size of your canvas.  Don't worry, I'm there to help.

Bring to the workshop
Drawing on canvas, this is to save time
Acrylic and or (if allowed) oils. The colours will depend on your personal choice
Water containers (2)
Paper towel
Don't worry I'm there so that you take home a great painting. . . . all levels accepted.
