Juror’s Comments
With the other juror absent due to illness, the delight and responsibility of judging the impressive output for 2012’s MGA Fall Juried Show fell to me alone. The usual debate and deliberation between jurors went internal as I argued for and against, questioning, pondering and weighing in order to arrive at the 41 works chosen from over 90 submissions.
The wise observation of Marcus Aurelius forming the theme of this exhibition is an idea artists of all stripes can relate to: There is no one truth but many, no one perspective but myriad. We recognize that all human experience is interpretation. Certain works spoke more directly to that idea, others more obliquely. In honouring the validity of all artistic expression, I chose works primarily upon the basis of artistic merit: What was the artist shooting for? How well did they achieve it? As the breadth and quality of this exhibition attest, the answer was frequently, “Very well indeed!” Creativity, originality and virtuosity are flourishing at MGA – be proud.
Ultimately, all artistic output is valid: we must make our art to stay whole. Don’t take ANY judgement personally – mine or anyone else’s: Everything you hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything you see is a perspective, not the truth. Keep striving. Keep creating.
