The Markham Group of Artists
Annual Juried Show
May 3 — July 31, 2021
We are currently experiencing a generational shift in personal, cultural and professional roles, and who better than artists to capture the movement, trauma and inspiration of these shifts? Viewpoints are not only about perspectives, but also the times and places in which we experience transition; the moments we pivot and reground in new realities or remember what we’ve left behind.
Juror Jeff Nye's comments:
Thanks to the Markham Group of Artists for providing me with the opportunity to engage once again with your talented artists. This has been a remarkably challenging year for us all, and an exceedingly difficult time in which to feel creative. I congratulate everyone who submitted work for this year’s exhibition! You have accomplished works of wonder, vitality, humour, and solace for an audience that is craving what you create.
This year’s theme, Viewpoints, provided me with a lens through which to assess the works that were submitted. I attempted to select works that related most evocatively to the ideas of movement, trauma and inspiration that were put forth in the call for artists. After reflecting on my choices, I also realize that I was drawn to pieces that provided a sense of optimism, or which were composed in a way that mirrored the anxious and yearning energy that many of us are experiencing during the pandemic.
To all the artists who submitted work, I hope you will continue your creative journeys and keep supporting each other. Now, more than ever, artists need to build our creative community – even if it is only through virtual means. Congratulations to the Markham Group of Artists on producing such engaging and diverse work for this exhibition.
