2019 Annual Juried Show


MGA Annual Juried Art Show

May 22 to June 2, 2019

McKay Art Centre, 197 Main Street, Unionville

All members of the Markham Group of Artists
are invited and eligible to participate in this show.
You are encouraged to submit 1 or 2 pieces of recently completed artwork.
All entries MUST BE pre-registered first.

We welcome our juror, Olexander Wlasenko, Curator of the Whitby Station Gallery. 





Important Dates and Times - please mark on your calendar:

  • Pre-Registration Deadline: Friday, May 17th (midnight) 

  • Registration / Jury Day: Tuesday, May 21st at the McKay Art Centre
    Artwork Drop-off: 10:30-11:30 am 
   Artwork Pick-up: 1:30-2:30 pm (unselected work only)
  • Show Open: Wednesday, May 22nd at 12 noon
  • Show Close: Sunday, June 2nd at 6:00 pm

  • Artwork Pick-up: Sunday, June 2nd 6:00 to 6:30 pm, OR, Monday, June 3rd 10:00 to 11:00 am
  • Opening Reception & Awards: Saturday, May 25th
 @ 2:00 to 5:00 pm
 - Awards Presentations 2:30 pm

Our Juror, 
Olex, will lead a walk and talk of the winning pieces after the
Awards Presentations at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 25th.

People's Choice Award
Throughout the show we encourage visitors to the show to actively participate
by voting for their favourite piece of artwork.
The winning artist will be presented
the 'People's Choice Award' certificate at the end of the show.

Participant Guidelines:

  1. All members of the Markham Group of Artists are eligible to enter a maximum of two pieces of work in the show.
  2. The entry fee is $20 for one piece, and an additional $5 for a second piece. Entry fees are payable by credit card when pre-registering online, or by cash or cheque on Registration Day, Tuesday, May 21st
  3. 20% commission will be charged on all sales for a period of up to one year following the start date of the show.
  4. MGA is not responsible for any artwork left uncollected at any time and assumes no responsibility for lost or damaged artwork.
  5. All participants are required to sit one three-hour hosting period during the show.

  6. Please bring a current one-page printed Artist Statement or Bio for inclusion in our Artists' Biography  binder. 

Acceptable Artwork:

  1. Only new work, completed within the last 2 years, and not previously exhibited in an MGA juried show will be accepted.

  2. All artwork must be suitably equipped and ready (pre-wired) for hanging. (Sawtooth hooks not acceptable.)

  3. Only original artwork (that is, no copies of works by other visual artists, whether paintings, photographs, illustrations or classroom works which have been demonstrated on by instructors) may be submitted. 

  4. Photographs, taken by the member, are acceptable as elements of a mixed media work. Single photographs are not eligible for submission.

  5. All entries must have an identifying label securely attached to the reverse side that includes the following information: i) Title; ii) Artist Name; iii) Size (H x W); iv) Media; v) Price, or NFS, if 'Not For Sale'.

  6. All details on the registration form and label must be completed before work is submitted. Once the jury process is complete, no changes can be made to this information.

  7. Promotional Materials: Artists whose work is accepted into the show are welcome to display artist business cards. Other material promoting art activities can be left for display, but must not exceed 4" by 6" and must not conflict with MGA workshops and activities.

  8. Artwork Size Limitations:
    • Must not exceed 40" in width (including frame).

    • Under glass must not exceed perimeter size of 124" (including frame).
    • Under plexiglas must not exceed perimeter size of 140" (including frame).

How to Participate: What Should I Do Next?

IMPORTANT! Please Carefully Read the Following:

  • Pre-register your artwork online or by phone before midnight on Friday, May 17th.

    Online pre-registration: You must be logged in to the MGA website with your username and password in order to register your work. 
    Telephone pre-registration: if you are unable to pre-register online please have ready the following information: a) Title, b) Size (H x W), c) Media, d) Price or NFS (Not For Sale), and call:

  • A photo of your artwork will be used to display your work on our website if your work is accepted into the show. Please upload an image of your artwork in JPEG file format, RGB colour mode, 2 MB maximum file size. (Providing this image will ensure top quality representation and simplifies the work of our volunteer photographer.)

  • Payment methods: Credit card payment can be made online. Cash/cheque will be accepted on Registration Day, May 21st. (Please disregard payment reminders generated by the website. Do not mail payment.)

  • All participants must volunteer to host-sit for one 3-hour time slot during show hours. To select your hosting time go to Member Opportunities/ 2019 Juried Show Hosting Schedule (or click HERE) and view the available time slots. The gallery will be open from 12:00 noon until 6:00 p.m. Wednesday and Sunday; 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Decide on your preferred time to host the show and reserve by calling Shirley Turchet at 905-477-5345, or email:

  • On Tuesday, May 21st, bring your pre-registered artwork(s) to the McKay Art Centre between 10:00 and 11:00 am to complete the registration process. NOTE: Entries brought after 11:00 am will not be accepted.

  • You are required to return to pick up un-selected work between 1:30 and 2:30 pm.

  • Bring cash or cheque payment for your registration fee, if you did not pre-pay online.

  • Ensure that a label is securely attached to the back of your ready-to-hang artwork clearly printed with:  Title, Artist Name, Size (H x W), Media, Price (or NFS). Bring a printed, one-page, letter-size biography for inclusion in the MGA Artists’ Information binder that will accompany the show.

  • Show Closing Day, Sunday, June 2nd: Go to the McKay Gallery to pick up any unsold artwork on either Sunday, June 2nd, at 6:00 pm, OR, Monday, June 3rd, between 10:00 am and 12:00 noon only.
